Can You Scrap Rims with Tires on them?

Many vehicle owners may wonder whether they can scrap rims with tires on them. If answered in short, then yes, but usually, it’s not mandatory. Many scrapyards will accept rims (wheels) with the tires still mounted, but the seller may get a little less payout or may be charged a small tire-disposal fee for the tires.

Why Do Buyers Prefer Rims Without Tires?

Here is why buyers like scrapyards, recycling centers, and scrap dealers prefer buying scrap rims with tires on them.Β

  • Sorting & processing: Buyers accept rims because of their metal content or their value in the market as used auto parts, but tires are complete rubber, which is less sought after in the market. So, facilities have to do extra work to separate metals by type (steel vs. aluminum) for recycling and resale if tires are mounted, which results in a slow process.
  • Additional disposal: Tires often require different recycling channels. Some yards handle tire recycling, others don’t and those that do might deduct handling or disposal costs.

Tips Before You Scrap Rims with Tires on Them

  1. Assess the Value: Assess the value of the rims with and without tires if rims can be sold as wheel-and-tire sets as reusable products, so consider selling them in sets online. But if rims or tires fetch a good value if they can be sold separately, then go for it.
  2. Prefer Reputable Facilities: I always prefer to work with licensed and reputable facilities to avoid any financial and legal issues.Β
  3. Shop Around: Always shop around and contact scrapyards ahead of time. Policies and prices vary. Some yards offer same-day pickup, and others won’t accept tires at all.

Bottom Line

You can often scrap rims with tires on, as it’s not an aspect that can break the deal, but for better cash and cleaner recycling, remove the tires first or sell the wheel-and-tire set if the parts are still reusable.
